INTRODUCTION TO
MALAYSIA

Malaysia is a
unique South East Asian country of two land mass,
comprising of Peninsula Malaysia
and Borneo. The South
China Sea separates these territories. Its total land area is
approximately 328,550 sq km.
The population
of Malaysia
is 26 million people (2006) and the major races living in harmony are the
Malay, Chinese, Indian, Iban,
Bidayuh,
Melanau, Kadazan, Bajau and a dozen or so smaller native groups. The major
religions practiced in
Malaysia are Islam, Buddhism, Christianity,
Hinduism, Animism and others.
Malaysia has an abundance of natural assets such as beautiful
beaches, rain-forest reserves, national parks and cool highlands. In
addition, there are also man-made modern skyscrapers such as the
Petronas
Twin Towers
and K.L.
Tower. Shopping complexes and
supermarkets are conveniently located in cities and towns. Villages have
ample little sundry shops.
The Malaysian
weather is tropical hot and humid with annual monsoon at year end. Rain is a
common thing here. The temperature is about 32 degree
celcius in the day and 28 degree celcius at
night. Humidity is approximately 70%.
Public and
private medical facilities of international standards can be found in most
Malaysian cities while hospitals of creditable standards catering to common
illnesses, dot most towns in the country. Most villages have at least one or
two medical clinics. Native villages in the rain-forest have visiting
doctors and midwives.
Malaysia’s main exports are electronic
equipment, petroleum and liquefied natural gas, wood and wood products, palm
oil, rubber, textiles, chemicals and tourism forms another big source of
income.
The standard
of living in Malaysia
is creditable compared with other developing countries. The GDP per capita
FOR 2005 (PPP) is 11,201 International Dollar per year (source IMF). The
size of its economy is about USD 118 Billion in 2005 and GDP growth rate is
approx 6 % per year (2003-2005).
In other words
a generous serving of a plate of rice with meat, vegetable and a drink can
be bought for approximately RM 15. Gasoline is priced at RM 2.70 per litre. RM
350,000 should
get a reasonable apartment with full facilities, in the city of
Kuala Lumpur
and its surrounding area. A laptop computer can be purchased for about RM
3000.
Malaysia with its many different races and cultures will
